Cougars win opening round of HSB

Superior Central won the first game of the WNMU-TV High School Bowl for the 2023-24 season. The Cougars defeated North Central in the trivia contest, their first win since being upset in the 2021 tournament by Gladstone. Games are prerecorded with results only announced after shows air on the Marquettebased PBS station.

St. Norbert makes bowl game Munising alum Riley Murk and the St. Norbert Green Knights will play in the program’s first bowl game on Sat. Nov. 18. The Cousins Subs Lakefront Bowl puts the runners-up of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference and the Midwest Conference against each other, which this year is St. Norbert and Monmouth College (Ill.), respectively.

Norse women lose late

The Bay College Norse women’s basketball team couldn’t surpass the Palm Beach State Panthers, resulting in a 77-65 loss on Nov. 10. SC alumna Emma Rutter had one point during 21 minutes of play in the loss for the Norse.

NMU Shlaine CCHA FOTW

Northern Michigan University’s Artem Shlaine was named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Forward of the Week. Shlaine scored three goals, two assists and had a league high 29-of-42 faceoffs won in a sweep of Lake Superior State last weekend.

UP Coach wins MiHSCA Coach of the Year

Leo Gorzinski was named the 2023 Michigan High School Coaches Association Football Coach of the Year for his work with the North Central Jets. The Jets were looking for a third-straight MHSAA Division 2 Eight-Man football championship this season, but lost to Lake Linden-Hubbell in the playoffs.

No JV hockey this season

Due to lack of players, the Manistique Emerald hockey co-op with Munising, Newberry and Superior Central will not have a JV program this season.
