Grand Marais welcomed in Maplewood Baptist Academy for a Northern Lights League basketball game on Monday. The Polar Bears were able to outlast the Black Bears to get the win, 45-39.
“It was a tight game from the opening buzzer, both teams being very young,” head coach Devin Lawrence said. “It was good to see the effort brought forth all the way to the end.”
Grand Marais had Ethan Bell hit a three and score eight total points in the opening quarter, and they led 10-7 after one. Four different players scored in the second, and the Polar Bears were hanging on to a slim 18-15 lead at the half.
In the third, Bell got to work again, netting eight points. Nathan Irvine, Teagan Lawrence and Gabe Lawrence hit fieldgoals as well and they led 32-22 entering the fourth.
In the final quarter, G. Lawrence hit a pair of field-goals and sank threeof- three from the line to help salt away the victory.
The Polar Bears had Bell finish with 22 points, G. Lawrence put in 11, Irvine scored eight and T. Lawrence added four.
Maplewood was led by Joey Hudecek with 17 points.
Grand Marais is scheduled to host Beaver Island Friday and Saturday
