Munising wrestling pins Newberry, Marquette on senior night

During the Munising wrestling team’s home tri-meet on Wednesday, Jan. 31, there were plenty of reasons to celebrate. The Mustangs won both of their matches. Andrew Cain reached the 100 career win mark and to top it all off, it was parents night, with a special nod to the squad’s seniors.

“It was an exciting night, with a number of intense matches,” head coach Joe Dolaskie said of the evening. “It was parent’s night for the entire team, not only seniors, and everyone wrestled their hearts out. For the four year seniors; Robert Johns and Andrew Cain, it was emotional. They’ve been a part of this program for a decade now, and for them to realize they will be wrestling in front of their home crowd for the last time is an eye-opening moment.”

And to see one of those seniors, Cain, reach the always celebrated milestone, that only added to the excitement.

“I’m especially proud of Andrew, who managed to land his 100th win that night, cementing his place in the Munising wrestling history book,” Dolaskie said The Mustangs were able to defeat Newberry 48-27.

Getting wins in this match was Henry Bosely (113), Logan Gould (120), Drew VanLandschoot (126), Emily Kelly (132), Kaylynn Johnson (165), Joseph Kelley (175), Matthew Pokela (190) and Robert Johns (285).

The Mustangs followed that up with a hardfought win over Marquette, 42-27.

Nord (106), Bosely (113), Gould (120), Cain (126), Nolan Dolaskie (138), Korbyn Smith (144), Axl Richards (150) and Milo Landgraff (157) all had victories in this match.

Munising hosted a Division 4 team regional on Thursday, facing Gwinn in the semi-final. Newberry had a bye to the championship, and faced the winner of that match later in the evening. The district winner advances to a regional tournament on Wednesday, at a location to be determined. The Mustangs are also in an individual district on Saturday at Manistique, where they’ll attempt to place in the top four to advance down to the Charlevoix individual regional on Saturday, Feb. 17.
