Even though they might have been tired from a long evening the night before, there really was no stopping the Munising girls basketball team in their home game with Felch North Dickinson last week. The Lady Mustangs were taking on the Lady Nordics on Wednesday, Feb. 7, and controlled things from the start, to the tune of a 52-12 victory.
“North Dickenson is a young team, but very scrappy,” head coach Matt Mattsson said. “I’ll give our kids credit for getting in bed at midnight after traveling four hours and playing a game the night before isn’t easy. But, we came out very strong defensively holding N-D to two points in the first quarter and scoring 23 with Bailey Corcoran having 14. The rest of the night saw a lot of action for all the Mustangs with seven players scoring.”
After leading 23-2 after the first, Emmy Crisp had an and-one play to highlight the second frame, as the Mustang lead grew to 32-4 at the half. Julia Prunick also hit a three in the third as things sat at 47-9 entering the fourth.
In all, the Munising defense only allowed four field-goals all night.
Corcoran led the Mustangs with 19 points, Crisp finished with 18, Prunick and Jailen Hancock had four points each, Elizabeth Wing had three and chipping in with two points apiece was Tessa Salo and Dayne Behning.
On Tuesday, Feb. 6 Munising won a road game at Crystal Falls Forest Park, 47-36.
“Crystal has played everyone tough this year, so coming out with a 47-36 win was very satisfying,” Mattson said.
Corcoran had a solid first, scoring 10 of the team’s 12 points; as it was 12-6 after one. In the second, Crisp netted second and Corcoran put in four, though their lead did dwindle to 24-20 at the break.
Eight more points by Crisp in the third and some stingy defense helped Munising pull away to lead 36-24 entering the fourth.
The Mustangs had Corcoran finish with 21 points, Crisp put in 18, Sabrina Smith added six and getting two was Behning.
Munising (13-2 overall) was at home against Marquette on Monday, played at Superior Central on Thursday, is scheduled to play at Brimley on Tuesday and hosts Rapid River on Feb. 22.
