Munising Baptist comes up short against Maplewood Baptist, Hannahville

The Munising Baptist boys basketball team found themselves up against a bit of a buzzsaw on Friday. The Bobcats were playing a Northern Lights League game over at Kinross Maplewood Baptist Academy, and came up short, 65-28.

“One of the biggest challenges in this game was the fact we were playing with only seven players against a quality opponent,” head coach Paul Johns said. “Once again, a rash of turnovers led to uncontested baskets on the other end. Maplewood is a physically strong team, so we had to earn everything we got against them. Maplewood spread the floor well and played a team game really well.”

Dylan Swift scored all eight of the team’s first quarter points, though they were down 20-8 after one. Swift, who hit two threes in the first quarter, hit another one in the second, though they fell further back at the half, trailing 38-13.

That gap grew to 56-17 entering the fourth.

Swift led the Bobcats with 22 points, Gabe Heyrman and Michael Maloney had two points apiece and adding one each was Ethan Swift and Trek.

“We are a young team trying to still develop as a single unit even late into the season,” Johns said.

On Tuesday, Feb. 13 M-B lost a home league contest to Hannahville, 85-38.

“As a coach, this was one of those games you like to forget quickly and just move on from,” Johns said. “Hannahville just beat us in every single area, particularly in the fundamentals. We turned the ball over way too often, and we let a team that is not overly tall out rebound us badly, and those turnovers and lack of rebounds resulted in easy baskets the other way.”

Hannahville led the whole way in this contest, 30-15 after one, 53-19 at the half and 70-28 entering the fourth.

The Bobcats did get 28 points from D. Swift. They also had two each from Maloney, Tom Norton, E. Swift, Ian Cross and Heyrman.

Hannahville was led by JaydenSagatawwith34points, DeShawn Metzger scored 20 and Jesse Wabinimkee scored 14.

Munising Baptist (613 overall) heads back to Maplewood Baptist on Friday and Saturday to take part in the Northern Lights Conference tournament.
