Lady Cougars come up short with Carney-Nadeau

The wins may not be coming as much as they may like, but Superior Central girls basketball head coach Skip Rutter is certainly pleased with how his Lady Cougars are playing, at least on one side of the ball. S-C lost at home to Carney-Nadeau on Monday, Feb. 19, but there were still some positives from the 55-14 setback. “We may run out of time this year to get where we need to be offensively, but we are working very hard to get better defensively,” Rutter said. “And, that showed a little bit against Carney, although the final score does not reflect it. We had a pretty decent couple quarters defensively. We held one of their leading scores to three points. Our goal is to get better on both ends of the floor and try to steal a district game.”

In the first quarter, Rory Hancock hit a three and Peyton Adams had a free throw, and they were down 13-4 after one. A three by Marissa Strohm highlighted the second, but they only fell further behind at the break, 24-9. It was also 42-12 entering the fourth.

S-C was led by Hancock with five points, Adams scored four, Strohm added three, Janessa Perron had two points and Josie Knaus scored one.

The Cougars also lost a home game with Stephenson on Thursday, Feb. 22, 52-32. On Feb. 20, they came up short at Norway, 46-14. Details for either contest were not available.

S-C (6-14 overall) played their final game of the regular season in Stephenson on Tuesday. They’ll play in a Division 4 district game at Munising on Wednesday.
