Playing in a key Skyline Central Conference Large Division game at Bark River Harris on Friday, the Munising girls basketball team was not able to get the job done. The Lady Mustangs were in the game early on, but couldn’t keep up as things played out, falling 52-31.
“Bark River is a fantastic team with 19 wins,” head coach Matt Mattson said.
Emmy Crisp had a nice opening quarter, scoring all of the team’s points, though they were behind 11-8 after one. The Mustangs’ offense found struggles in thee second quarter, and they fell further back by the half, 23-12.
Munising got going again in the third, as they saw Crisp net eight more points and Bailey Corcoran was able to score three. They were still down double- digits entering the fourth though, 35-23.
Corcoran netted six more points in the final minutes, but it wasn’t enough to get the Mustangs back in the mix.
Crisp was able to score 19 points in the game; she now sits at 951 career points. Corcoran netted nine and getting one point each was Tessa Salo, Sabryna Smith and Julia Prunick.
On Thursday, Feb. 22, Munising picked up a lopsided home win over Rapid River, 66-12.
“This was a good game for us to play a lot of people,” Mattson said. “Crisp had 25 points in 12 minutes and we had nine different players score. We held Rapid to four buckets and none in the second half without a starter playing for us. So, I’m extremely proud of the effort and execution of our second string players.”
Munising held a commanding 30-3 lead after just the first quarter and also led 46-9 at the half and 58-9 entering the fourth.
To go along with Crisp’s big night, Elizabeth Wing and Corcoran each scored nine points, Salo and Prunick added six points each. Dayne Behning scored four, Tamryn Nolan netted two and adding one each was Kate Mattson and Liv Cotey.
On Monday, Feb. 19, Munising went over to Brimley, where they picked up a solid 55-40 victory.
“Brimley is a tough team from the east end of the U.P.,” Mattson said. “They shoot the ball very well and have good guard play. First half was very close with the score 30-26. The second half I thought we played better defensively. Crisp had a fantastic night scoring 30 points. We slowly pulled away in the second half.”
Joining Crisp in the scoring column was Corcoran and Prunick with nine points each, Behning scored seven and Smith was able to score two.
Munising (16-4 overall) hosted Newberry on Tuesday and played in their last regular season game on Thursday, at Manistique. The Mustangs also play in a Division 4 district at home against Superior Central on Wednesday.
