Superior Central boys drop finale at Baraga

The Superior Central boys basketball team was hoping for an exclamation point to put at the end of a stellar regular season. Instead, the Cougars were perhaps left questioning things a bit, as they lost over at Baraga on Friday, 46-29.

“We were really disappointed with how we showed up to compete in Baraga,” head coach Adam Ely said. “Not how you want to play, especially in our last game. Being senior led, we shouldn’t have these nights and we have had a few. Two-of-15 from the line is pretty indicative of our night.”

S-C was down just 17-11 after the first quarter, but that turned quickly into a bigger hole, 26-14 at the half. The Cougars did get seven third quarter points by Trent Rutter, and a three by CJ Adams, and this brought them back to within 32-26 entering the fourth.

A field-goal by Rutter and a free throw by Elijah Penney was all that they could get in the final frame though, and Baraga was able to secure the win.

The Cougars were led by Rutter with 13 points, Logan Frusti scored five, putting in four was Zander Bigger, Adams finished with three, Jason Kanerva scored two and Penney chipped in with one.

S-C (17-5 overall) hosted Rock Mid-Pen on Wednesday in a Division 4 district semi-final contest. Hannahville and Powers North Central faced off in the other semi, with the winners set to play Friday, at a site to be determined. This district winner moves on to Tuesday’s regional semi-final contest in Kingsford.

“We were excited to get seeded in that district, we worked hard for that,” Ely said. “I believe our seniors were in first grade when we had the last winning season, but they aren’t settling for just that, they have bigger aspirations.”
