Munising wrestling wraps up season at state finals

The Munising wrestling team officially capped off the season on Friday and Saturday, down at the individual state championships at Ford Field in Detroit. The Mustangs had three wrestlers take part in Division 4 action, although they were unable to get any placers.

“We had a rough run down in Detroit,” head coach Joe Dolaskie said. “All three of our wrestlers were seeded low, due to their fourth place finishes at regionals. “

Korbyn Smith was competing in the 144 weight class and he opened up against Cory Perry of Hudson, and he struggled against the well-decorated wrestler, getting pinned midway through the first period. He also lost his next bout, to Jack Bagwell of Maritn, thus ending his time at the finals.

Joseph Kelley was in the 165 weight class. He lost his first bout in a 4-0 decision to Mason Lindsey of Bronson. He bounced back by pinning Peyton Ewalt of Carson City-Crysyal in the second period. His day was ended in the next round however, when he lost on a 3-1 decision to Owen Mikulka of Ithaca.

Logan Gould was competing in the 120 weight class. He lost a 9-0 major decision to St. Louis’ Genaro Soto in the first round and he dropped his next bout as well, on a second period pin to Devin Doorlag of Gobles. “In spite of the losses, the experience of wrestling at Ford field in front of thousands of spectators is going to be a lifelong memory for these three,” Dolaskie said. “We’re hoping to have at least three make it next year as well, with Korbyn Smith returning and leading his team using the experience he gained over this past weekend. The future of wrestling for the Munising Mustangs is bright, and I can’t wait until we’re back on the mats in November.”
