The Munising Track and Field teams got the new season underway on Friday, April 19 when they competed in Manistique for the Kiwanis Invitational. In the six team meet, the boys were able to take second place while the girls finished fifth.
“First meet of the year [we were] looking to get some times,” head coach Matt Mattson said. “We had a couple athletes missing with other sports, but overall I was happy with the effort and the times.”
For the boys, Jack Dusseault won the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.64 seconds and Keelan Hase was sixth. In the 200 meter Dyland Adkinson was third at 26.02 and Hase placed sixth again. The 800 meter saw a win by Trevor Nolan on a run of 2 minutes 16 seconds and Dan Goss won the 1600 meter run and 3200 meter run in times of 5:04 and 11:36. Nolan Dolaskie was also sixth in the 1600 and Nathan Peterson was sixth in the 3200.
Joe Kelley did well in the hurdle events. He won the 300 with a time of 47.59 and he took second in the 110 with an 18.83.
The team had three first place relay teams as well. In the 4×200 Dusseault, Logan Gould, Korbyn Smith and Zack Lindquist won with a time of 1 hour 39 seconds and in the 4×400 it was Kelley, Smith, Nolan and Lindquist winning in 3:54. Their other first place relay came in the 4×800, with Dolaskie, Darren Marshall, Goss and Nolan winning in 9:18.
Kelley added a ninth place finish in the discus with a throw of 65 feet 4 inches and Nick Kulik was seventh in the long jump with a distance of 14 feet.
On the girls’ side, Alexandra Goss was seventh in the 100 and sixth in the 200 with times of 15.47 and 31.97. Olivia Cotey had a solid second place 2:53 run in the 800 and she was also fifth in the 1600 at 6:38. Dayne Behning won the 300 hurdles with a 54.12 and she was fourth in the 100 hurdles at 19.92.
The girls’ top relay team came in the 4×800, with a third place finish and time of 4:48 thanks to Cotey, Goss, Kate Mattson and Sabryna Smith.
Ava Tebear was ninth in the shot put at 23’7.5 and Elizabeth Wing was their top finisher in the discus, throwing a 70’8.
Munising heads to Rapid River on May 2.
