Superior Central baseball drops home game to Manistique, sweeps North Central

The Superior Central baseball team was back in action on Thursday, May 2. The Cougars were hosting Manistique for a scheduled doubleheader. They lost the opener 7-1 and game two was canceled due to worsening field conditions caused by rainfall.

Blake Walther suffered the loss pitching for S-C, though he did strike out five batters. The Emeralds had Isiah Brow get the win, striking out 14.

“The rain started before the game and the key was getting the ball in play, our defense had a hard time handling the wet conditions and Manistique didn’t have too many chances as Brow didn’t allow very many base runners,” head coach Greg Mannisto said. “Brow is a very good pitcher, he does a great job at keeping you off balance, our hitters were overmatched.”

On Tuesday, April 30 things went better for the Cougars, as they claimed 11-0 and 17-6 victories at Powers North Central.

Getting the win on the mound in the opener was Bradley VanDamme, and he struck out six. Walther led the team with two base hits. “The defense played really well behind Bradley, he pitched a really good game only allowing two hits,” Mannisto said.

Earning the win in the nightcap was Blake Tanner, who pitched all six innings and gave up six runs. “Offensively, we put a lot of pressure on the base paths and were patient at the plate totaling 12 walks in the game,” Mannisto said. “This game was much closer than the score indicates, we didn’t pull away until the sixth inning, highlighted by a Travis Mills RBI. Pitching was the key to this doubleheader as we ended up only using two pitchers on the day.”

S-C was scheduled to host North Dickinson on Thursday, heads to Stephenson today (Friday) and will host Ishpeming-Westwood on Monday.
