The Munising softball team had hoped to put on a show for their home crowd at Heroes Field on Monday. The Lady Mustangs had been playing solid ball heading in, but unfortunately dropped these contests, 21-9 and 26-15.
“Poor base running cost us, it was not pretty,” head coach Casey Ford said. “It was too bad because we had such a great crowd and there was a lot of buzz coming off winning three-of-four games.”
An early highlight in game one was Kaylen Kienitz hitting a home run in her first at bat of the night.
Game two was tied 7-7 through two innings but the Mustangs were unable to keep up in the final five frames. “We hit the ball well, the base running was a lot better in game two,” Ford said.
For the night, Toni Briggs had one triple, one double and two singles, Kristin Joyner had three singles, Maggie Beauchaine had two doubles, one single and one walk and Athena Platt had one triple and one single.
On Thursday, May 9, Munising split a pair of games at Gwinn, dropping game one 20-12 but bouncing back for a 23-8 four inning win in game two.
After taking the blame for some baserunning errors in the opener, Ford was definitely happy with how his group responded in game two. “We can hit the ball, that’s not the issue, it is eliminating the errors and being aggressive on the bases,” he said. “We got off to a fast start [in game two] and never looked back. Extremely happy to get the win.”
Kristin Joyner had four hits on the night, including a three run homer. Kienitz had five hits and Hayden Bayer and Brooklynn Joyner had three hits apiece. Briggs also hit the ball well, according to Ford. B. Joyner got the win in game two, her third of the year.
Munising hosted Carney-Nadeau on Tuesday, is at home against Norway on Friday and heads to Superior Central on Monday.
