Munising tennis has busy start to season

With May finally on the calendar, the Munising tennis team has taken full advantage of the warmer temperatures. They’ve had a busy start to the season, with their most recent match taking place on Friday in a JV tournament in Marquette.

“Beautiful day for tennis, we brought three doubles teams, each in different brackets,” head coach Corinne Hoffman said. The team of Nolan Dolaskie and Blake Tyner took second place in their bracket.

On May 8, they took part in a match at Ishpeming, where they lost 7-3. Carson Kienitz won his number-one singles match 6-4 and 6-1. “This was a great match between the two players,” Hoffman said. “Carson had such a great strategy that has been working really well for him in other matches too. I wish I could share, but like a magician, they don’t reveal their secrets.”

Playing in third singles Dylan Adkinsd won in a long back-and-forth match, 6-7, 7-6 and 6-3. “It was based on who had the mental capacity to close the match and Dylan did,” Hoffman said. Their other winners were Danny Goss and Frank Carlson in number- one doubles on scores of 6-4, 6-7 and 7-6. “These players work great together and are doing well this season,” Hoffman said.

On May 3, they competed in a doubleheader at Escanaba. They lost to host Escanaba 7-1, with Goss and Carlson getting a win in first doubles, 6-3, 4-6 and 7-5. They followed up with a 4-4 tie against Iron Mountain. Kienitz (number one singles), Jack Carlson (number four singles), Goss and Carlson (first doubles) and Cody Lincoln and Trzeciak (number three doubles) all won their matches.

Munising competes in a JV tournament at Ishpeming Westwood today (Friday) and is in a varsity tournament at Negaunee on Saturday.
