Munising golf wins Big Bay Invite, Carter Deatsman sinks hole in one

Back on May 8, the Munising golf team had quite the memorable day at the Big Bay de Noc Invitational at the Garden Golf Course. The Mustang boys won the event as a team and Carter Deatsman pulled off the impressive feat of getting a hole in one. “As a team we were consistent with our scores to have two in the low 70’s and the rest in the 80’s, it really went well for us,” head coach Bette Immel said.

The Mustangs shot 312 as a team, led by Deatsman who won the event with a 73. Hudson Rockhill was second with a 74, Jamisen Ake carded an 81, Blake Walther shot an 84 and with an 88 was Cody Lincoln. Deatsman got his hole in one on the par four fifth hole.

“I’ve coached golf for over 30 years and in any of the matches that I’ve been affiliated with in the U.P., I’ve never had one of my players or any of our opponents get a hole in one, especially on a par four,” Immel said. “This was a driveable par 4 and it was an uphill lie and when he got up there to the green, there was nothing there and he thought ‘what the heck, I’ll look in the hole’ and there the ball was. He didn’t even get to see it drop in the hole. It’s very exciting.”

The Lady Mustangs shot 255 on nine holes as a team to take second. Jailen Hancock led them with a 57, good for sixth place, Sabryna Smith hit a 63, Cadence Schultz carded a 66, Emmy Crisp was able to hit a 69 and Tessa Salo came in with a 78.

On Tuesday, May 14, Munising was at the Wawonowin Golf Course for an event hosted by Ishpeming Westwood. The boys took second place overall with a team score of 348. Rockhill shot a 75 to take second place. Lincoln carded a 90, Ake added a 91 and Deatsman shot a 92.

“For Hudson, that is a great score on a course that he has never played on before, so for him to do that against Division 1 schools and finish second, that was a nice accomplishment,” Immel said.

The Lady Mustangs shot 512 as a team. Jolie Ake led with a 113, Carissa Deatsman shot a 128, Smith was good for a 134 and Schuultz added a 137. “I thought Jolie had a nice round, for never playing the course before, she was consistent in her play,” Immel said.

Munising was at Big Bay on Thursday for the Skyline Conference meet and heads to the UP finals, hosted by West Iron County on Wednesday.
