Superior Central rolls to mercy style wins over Newberry

Coming off a pair of disappointing losses two days earlier, the Superior Central softball team was able to bounce back on Thursday, May 16. The Lady Cougars were hosting Newberry in nonleague action and won both in five innings, 11-1 and 13-2.

Sammy Johnson got the win in game one, going five innings and giving up one run and according to head coach Rich Swajanen she had multiple strikeouts.

“She pitched well, she has pitched quite a few games where she has given up just one or two hits and even one or two no-hitters,” he said. “She has been throwing better and better all the time. Her speed is up, her changeup is working pretty good and she is getting good control of her change-up.”

Payton Latvala got the win in game two; giving up two runs in five innings of work.

The game two offense was highlighted by a moon-shot of a home run by Alice Hancock.

“She hit a long home run, dead center field against the wind,” Swajanen said. “That was hit well, she got all of that one. She just has been hitting the ball all over, she hits the ball hard.”

On Tuesday, May 14 S-C lost two league contests at Norway, 6-3 and 9-4. Johnson took the loss in game one, but Swajanen believed that most of the runs were unearned. “We out-hit them, but we made costly errors,” he said. “We can play a better game against them, they are a smart team and coached well.”

Kiera McDonald took the loss in game two, with Johnson seeing time in relief. “It’s all about playing in districts and cutting down on our mistakes,” Swajanen said. “That’s it, we have to cut down on our errors.”

Superior Central played at home against Bark River-Harris on Tuesday and was at Munising on Thursday. They’ll also play in a Division 4 district in Munising on Friday, May 31.
