The Superior Central track and field teams competed in a Division 3 regional meet at Rapid River on Wednesday, May 15. The Cougars had both their boys’ and girls’ teams finish in sixth place, out of seven squads.
For the boys’, highlights included Aiden Korpi taking sixth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.20 seconds, Gavin Vining taking fifth in the 200 at 26.61 and Will Spranger taking third (UP finals qualifier) in the 400 by running a 55.71. Cody Moore was also sixth in the 400. Cole Ozoga finished sixth in the 800 with a run of 2 minutes 34 seconds, followed by Eli Penney in eighth and Isaac Gleason in ninth. Korpi finished fourth in the 1600 (finals qualifier) with a time of 5:32. Clay Horne was third in the 300 hurdles (finals qualifier) with a time of 56.63.
They also had all four relay teams qualify for the UP Finals. The 4×100 team of Vining, Korpi, Jack Kasten and CJ Adams was second with a time of 51.72 and in the 4×200, it was the second place team of Cody Moore, Adams, Spranger and Vining with a time of 1:46. The 4×400 squad was third with a time of 4:13, with runs by Moore, Korpi, Miller Lemmond and Spranger. In second was the 4×800 relay of Ozoga, Korpi, Isaac Gleason and Evan Simon, timing out at 9:37.
Connor Blomgren was sixth in the shot put at 31-10 and Spranger finished fifth in the high jump at 5-00. Lemmond added a 10th place finish in the long jump.
On the girls’ side, Marlene Johnson was third (finals qualifier) in the 100 meter dash with a time of 14.19 and Meredith Kempker was fourth (finals qualifier) in the 200 with a sprint of 30.27. Lilly Simon was also fifth in the 200 and sixth in the 400 with runs of 31.60 and 1:14.
Bree Swajanen was third in the 1600 (finals qualifier) with a 7:13 and Elaina Karvinen was fifth in the 100 hurdles at 21.52. Mali Hillier was third in the 300 hurdles (finals qualifier) with a time of 57.44.
They had two relay teams qualify for the finals. The 4×100 was third with a 57.37 on runs by Aiyanna Taskey, Mali Hillier, Kempker and Johnson. The other was the 4×200 squad of Rowan Allender, Hillier, Kempker and Johnson who finished second with a 2:01. Aiyanna Taskey was also fifth in the shot put with a throw of 22-07.
Superior Central competed in the Skyline Conference meet on Tuesday and will head to the UP finals on Saturday, June 1 at Kingsford.
