Munising boys track team claims Skyline Conference championship

The Skyline Central Conference championship was held at Stephenson on Tuesday, May 21. Munising was able to once again crown their boys’ team as champions, as they won the meet; giving them their third straight league championship. The Lady Mustangs had a solid showing as well, coming in sixth place out of 12 teams; while Superior Central had their boys come in seventh and their girls place 12th.

“Winning the conference meet for a third consecutive year was a huge feat,” Munising head coach Matt Mattson said. “We lost (key contributors) to graduation last year so obviously that was a ton of points to try to replace. Our relay teams performed great, Senior Reece Cotey winning the 100 was probably the highlight for me, he works extremely hard and is having a great senior season. Danny Goss and Trevor Nolan are a great one-two punch in the distance events.”

Munising won the boys’ portion of the meet with 72 points; while Bark River-Harris was second with 54. Superior Central tallied 14 points.

For the Mustangs, Reece Cotey won the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.97 seconds while Zack Lindquist and Korbyn Smith were fourth and fifth in the 400 with times of 56.76 and 57.49. Dan Goss won the 1600 on a run of 4 minutes 43 seconds, and was followed closely by Trevor Nolan in second at 4:46. Joe Kelley added a second place finish in the 110 hurdles, timing out at 17.67.

The Mustangs also won three relay events. The 4×100 won in a time of 46.95 thanks to Cotey, Dylan Adkinson, Kelley and Jack Dusseault. The winning 4×200 (1:37) team was Cotey, Adkinson, Lindquist and Dusseault and claiming a 4×800 (8:57) victory was Nolan Dolaskie, Adkinson, Goss and Nolan.

Bark River-Harris won the girls’ side with 75 points. Munising had 24 points to come in sixth and S-C had one point.

For the Lady Mustangs, Sabryna Smith was third in the 100 meter dash at 13.63, Olivia Cotey was eighth in the 1600 and Dayne Behning was third in the 100 hurdles at 18.20. Their top relay came in the 4×100; when a squad of Kate Mattson, Tessa Salo, Kaylen Kienitz and Alexandra Goss took fourth with a combined time of 57.55.

They also had Elizabeth Wing place third in the discus on a toss of 93’3. “Sprinter Sabryna Smith had a nice day and Elizabeth Wing has been placing in all throwing events,” Mattson said. “With only one meet left, the U.P. Finals, we’ll look to stay healthy, fine tune a couple things and hopefully both teams will perform well.”

For Superior Central, starting with the boys, Will Spranger was second in the 400 meter run with a 55.71 and Carter Korpi had a ninth place run in the 1600. They also had a 4×200 relay team come in fourth, thanks to runs by CJ Adams, Chris Kulik, Cody Moore on Spranger, who ran a collective time of 1:44. Connor Blomgren was 12th in the shot put.

For the Lady Cougars, Marlene Johnson was 10th in the 100 and Bree Swajanen placed 10th in the 1600. Elaina Karvinen was also ninth in the 100 hurdles. They had a sixth place relay team run a 58.92, on the legs of Aiyanna Taskey, Mali Hillier, Marlene Johnson and Meredith Kempker.
