Munising Baptist soccer kicks way to shutout over Grand Marais

So far so good for the Munising Baptist soccer team this season. The Bobcats were taking part in a Northern Lights League game at Grand Marais on Thursday, September 5 and came away with a 5-0 win, keeping their early season record undefeated.

The victory was a bit unusual however. Since the Polar Bears entered the contest short on players, the two sides opted to play eight-on-eight. The Bobcats led the game 1-0 at the half before putting things away in the second half.

“It was a little odd, it took us a while to get it figured out because there’s not as many players on the field, so not everyone is where they normally are to pass the ball to,” M-B head coach Hunter MacArthur said. “It took a bit to get going, but once we got going, it was a good game.”

The Bobcats had four goals from Dylan Swift, while Isaac Beaverson netted one. Eileen Veneberg assisted on one goal and Jonny MacArthur had one assist as well. Ethan Swift was in goal to get credit with the shutout.

“It took us a while to get in rhythm but [once we led 5-0] I was moving a lot of players to different positions to let the players move around the field, rather than being always in their specific position,” MacArthur said.

M-B (4-0 overall, 4-0 NLL) returns to action with a key contest on Tuesday at Big Bay de Noc and hosts Grand Marais on Thursday, September 19.

“All-around it’s a positive to be 4-0 after the first couple of weeks,” MacArthur said. “I think [Big Bay] is going to be a good game, like it always is, we always play each other tough. We are just looking to hopefully go there and come home with a win and keep the win streak going.”
