Munising Baptist comes up just short at Big Bay in key soccer showdown

Playing a crucial Northern Lights League soccer game at Big Bay de Noc on Tuesday, September 17, Munising Baptist knew it had to play well from the start. A pair of early goals by Big Bay put the Bobcats behind early, and they were never able to recover, and while they eventually tied things up, they lost 4-3 in a shootout.

“We played well and held the ball to their side of the field for most of the game but they got two quick goals to start because of some mistakes on defense and then it was an uphill climb the rest of the way,” head coach Hunter MacArthur said.

After trailing 2-0, the Bobcats got on the board with a goal by Dylan Swift, making it 2-1. M-B fell behind 3-1 early in the second half, but Swift managed to score his second and third goals to bring the game to a tie. Trek was credited with an assist on one of the goals, while the other two were unassisted.

Big Bay scored four goals to Munising Baptist’s three in the shootout to give them the victory.

“It was a great game that stung for us to lose in the same fashion we lost the championship last year,” MacArthur said. “From here on out we have a very busy schedule of games to finish the season. The team handled the loss well and are motivated to be better.”

M-B played at Mackinac Island on Monday, hosted Hannahville on Tuesday, heads to play Copper Country on Friday and Saturday and returns home to take on Ojibwe on Monday.

“This next week is a tough test for us, but we are hopeful to come out of it with four more wins,” MacArthur said.
