Munising opens with victory

It was a winning start to the season for the Munising boys basketball team. On Nov. 26, the Mustangs made the trip to Norway for the season opener for both teams, and Munising used a 24-point night from Trevor Nolan to lead the way to a 50-34 victory.

“It is always nice to win that first game, especially against a good team and good program like Norway, who is usually a top contender to win the conference,” Munising head coach Terry Kienitz said. “Our defense stood out. We had really solid defense, which is always great in the early season. Teams are still figuring their offense out, and it is hard to scout teams early in the season. More reason to start off with good defense.”

Nolan got going right away, draining five 3-pointers in the opening quarter to stake the Mustangs to a big early lead. Jack Dusseault hit a pair of field goals as well, and Carson Kienitz hit one as Munising led 21-4 after one.

In the second, Nolan hit two more 3s and converted on an andone play. Munising had a 34-16 advantage at the half.

The Mustangs cooled off somewhat in the second half, but they did get five points from Kienitz in the third and took a 46-20 lead entering the fourth.

Nolan hit seven 3s as part of his 24 points. Dusseault added 13 points, Kienitz finished with nine and Nolan Connaughton and Zach Lindquist had two points each.
