Freshman Bowerman scores 35 in her debut

At long last, the Munising girls basketball team was able to open the season on Tuesday, Dec. 10.

The Mustangs, who had their contest in their opening week cancelled because of weather, got on the court for a non-league game at Brimley, and they were able to pick up a well-played 7454 victory.

“[Our opening game] got snowed out, so going into [this], Brimley had two games under their belt,” Munising head coach Matt Mattson said. “They are wellcoached and have some talented players, but I thought we came out very fast and aggressive.”

The Mustangs came out well and took a 24-13 lead after the first 8 minutes. They kept leads of 46-33 at the half and 59-43 entering the fourth quarter.

In her first varsity game, Munising freshman Addie Bowerman had 35 points and 10 rebounds. Bailey Corcoran drained three shots from 3-point land and finished with 20 points.

“Bowerman had a huge game, scoring 35 and shooting over 70 percent from the field,” Mattson said. “She’s a very talented young player who mixes in well with our experienced players we have back from last year.”

On Friday, Munising earned a road win over Powers North Central, 64-28.

The Mustangs had another fast start, claiming a 28-6 lead after the first quarter. They also held a 45-13 margin at the half and 5422 advantage entering the fourth. “I thought Dayne Behning came out aggressive offensively against their zone, which was nice to see,” Mattson said. “Elizabeth Wing had some great minutes on both ends of the floor.”

Behning led the Mustangs with 21 points with Corcoran and Bowerman putting in 13 points apiece.

Munising (2-0 overall) played at Stephenson on Monday, was at Gwinn on Wednesday and will have their home opener on Dec. 30 against Pickford.
