Mustangs once again rely on defense

“It was a good defensive battle against North Dickinson,” Munising head coach Terry Kienitz said. “However, we were getting open looks at the basket. We just did not shoot very good from the outside. ND has a taller, athletic team that rebounds well, and I tried to express the importance of boxing out, but ND got a lot of offensive rebounds and second-chance points. We forced overtime, and once again our defense won the game for us, holding ND to just two points in overtime.”

Trevor Nolan hit a first-quarter 3-pointer and Jack Dusseault hit an early field goal as well, but the Mustangs were behind 8-7 after the first quarter. In the second, Carson Kienitz drilled a 3 and Nolan and Zach Lindquist connected on buckets, and it was tied up at the half, 14-14.

Nolan Connaughton and Kienitz hit one 3-pointer each in the third, and Dusseault added four points in the frame as well, but North Dickinson inched ahead after three, 25-24.

Key 3-pointers by Kienitz and Nolan in the fourth helped send the game to overtime at 34-all. In the extra session, Nolan buried his third 3-pointer of the night and also was 3-of-4 from the freethrow line to help the Mustangs escape with the win.

The Mustangs had Nolan finish with 14 points. Kienitz netted 11, and Dusseault hit double figures as well, scoring 10. Connaughton had three points and Lindquist added two.

Munising (4-0) hosted Rapid River on Monday, played at Forest Park on Thursday and will play in a holiday tournament Dec. 26 and 27 in Ishpeming against Westwood and Ishpeming.
