Cougars earn first victory of the season

It took a late rally in regulation to do it, but the Superior Central boys basketball team was able to get its first win of the season on Dec. 16. The Cougars, playing at Carney-Nadeau, escaped with an exciting 55-50 overtime victory.

“It was nice to get a win, obviously, and on the road,” head coach Adam Ely said. “I liked our poise; we didn’t stop running our stuff or get panicked.”

The Cougars had four first-quarter points from Zander Bigger and 3-pointers from Drew Begovac and Ryder Kroupa, and they led 12-9 after one. Kroupa netted five more points in the second, but they struggled on offense otherwise and fell behind 25-19 at the break.

Bigger netted six more points in the third, which ignited a rally that pulled them to within a point, 33-32.

The Cougars faced a six-point deficit with about three minutes to play. Blake Tanner, who scored eight points in the fourth quarter, hit some key baskets to help Superior Central pull even and force overtime at 41-41.

In the extra session, Tanner remained productive, adding eight more points as the Cougars pulled in front for the win.

SC was led by Tanner with 21 points. Bigger netted 14, and Kroupa added 12. Begovac scored seven.

Superior Central (1-2) is at the Carney-Nadeau Christmas Tournament today and Saturday.
