Munising girls survive rough night at the line

A rough night at the free-throw line isn’t how any coach wants to close out a game.

The Munising girls basketball team and head coach Matt Mattson had to endure just that, however, when they shot 33 percent from the charity stripe on Dec. 18 but held on for a 47-42 victory.

“Gwinn is a good team with an All-U.P. player in Makayla Delmont, so not an easy task,” Mattson said. “I thought defensively we played well all night. Our inability to make free throws was a huge reason we couldn’t put Gwinn away until the final seconds. You don’t win many games shooting 9-for-27 from the line, so we need to focus some more of our practice time on shooting free throws.”

Munising led the game 16-9 after the first quarter, 26-14 at the half and 36-24 entering the fourth. Their woeful night at the line made things interesting, but they survived to get the win.

Addie Bowerman led the team with 24 points, and Dayne Behning chipped in with 15 points.

On Dec. 16, Munising won at Stephenson, 65-49.

“We came out of the gates quickly and took an early lead,” Mattson said. “Stephenson has a couple of nice ballplayers, so they didn’t make it easy. We had two players score in double figures.”

The Mustangs used that solid early play to lead 24-7. After two, it was 35-20; entering the fourth, the margin was 53-20.

Bowerman led the Mustangs in scoring again with 25 points, while Bailey Corcoran added 21.

Munising (4-0 overall) hosts Pickford on Monday and will head to Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Jan. 3 to play Brimley. The Mustangs also host Bark River-Harris on Jan. 7.
