Munising Baptist and Mackinac Island put their boys basketball teams through a tough twoday travel schedule.
A day after the Bobcats played on the island, they returned home last Friday to welcome the same Lakers team in a Northern Lights League game. Munising Baptist dropped the contest, 6454.
“As a team, we played better than the day before, but we struggled to stop a hot-shooting Vincent Davis, who totaled 31 for the game,” MBS head coach Paul Johns said. “We took a 48-42 lead into the fourth quarter, but cold shooting down the stretch and a series of turnovers allowed the Lakers to overcome their six-point deficit.”
Dylan Swift scored 14 first-quarter points for the Bobcats, helping them hold an 1811 lead after one. The Lakers surged ahead to lead 30-27 at the half, but MBS rallied back to take the 48-42 lead.
Swift finished with 28 points to lead the Bobcats. Will Norton scored 12, Ian Cross netted six, Ethan Swift chipped in with four and Gabe Heyrman added two.
The previous day, Feb. 6, the Bobcats dropped a conference game at Mackinac Island, 55-41.
The Bobcats took a 14-7 lead after the first quarter but fell back 26-21 at the half. They were unable to get back into this one.
“Mackinac Island was able to maintain their lead and even stretch it in the second half for the 14-point victory,” Johns said. “Timely cold shooting and an inability to stop Lakers big man Jordan Fisher in the paint was the biggest difference.”
Dylan Swift led the Bobcats with 21 points. Ethan Swift netted seven, Heyrman added six, Cross had four and Norton contributed two.
For the Lakers, Fisher scored 18 and Davis added 17.
The Bobcats also lost a Northern Lights League contest at Hannahville on Feb. 4, 96-59.
“We got overwhelmed by a talented, senior-filled roster,” Johns said. “We battled a team who tried to break a 3-pointers-made record, by shooting only 3s in the game. They attempted no 2s or free throws the entire game. We battled through injuries and illness just to finish the game. This was just a game you try to forget, because of how badly the team played as a whole.”
The Bobcats were led by Dylan Swift’s 30 points. Ethan Swift hit double figures with 13, Remy South Olson added four and Norton and Heyrman scored two each.
Jayden Sagataw paced Hannahville with 14 3-pointers for 42 points. Dashaun Metzger added 21 points.
MBS was scheduled to play at Paradise on Tuesday, and they’ll head to Hannahville on Friday and Saturday for the Northern Lights League tournament. They host the DC Knights on Tuesday.
