Stacking wins on top of wins made the Munising girls basketball team look nearly unbeatable at times this winter. The eighthranked Mustangs, who opened the season with 14 straight wins, finally met their match on Feb. 6, when they dropped a road game at North Dickinson, 47-38.
“North Dickinson is a good team with only two conference losses,” head coach Matt Mattson said. “We came out flat, and North Dickinson outplayed us. We had a little stretch in the third quarter where we cut into their lead but couldn’t get over the hump.”
Munising’s early struggles left them chasing a 13-5 deficit after the first quarter. Dayne Behning scored six points in the second and Elizabeth Wing converted a three-point play, but they were still down 22-14 at the half.
Bailey Corcoran netted eight points in the third, but it wasn’t enough for the Mustangs, who were behind 32-24 entering the fourth.
Addie Bowerman hit for seven of her 12 points in the final frame. Behning added 11 points in the game, Corcoran scored 10, Wing finished with three and Tessa Salo added two.
On Feb. 3, Munising picked up a well-played win over Crystal Falls Forest Park, 66-44.
“Crystal is a good team that has been playing well,” Mattson said. “I thought the game was played pretty well and was tight at halftime. The second half, I thought our defense wore on them and we pulled away in the fourth quarter.”
Corcoran had a huge game to lead the Mustangs, scoring 32 points. Ten of those came in the first quarter, helping her team to a 19-14 edge after one.
Bowerman, who tallied 13 points on the night, netted five in the second as Munising led 31-26 at the half. They were also in front 46-35 entering the fourth.
Others scoring for the Mustangs included Behning with nine, Wing with six, Kate Mattson with four and Salo and Olivia Cotey with one point each.
