With all that was going on, there might have been some distractions for the Superior Central boys basketball team in their home game with Munising Baptist on Feb. 10. The Cougars, though, were able to get the job done in the non-conference meeting, claiming a 62-43 victory.
“We had parents and senior night, so that takes you out of a routine and probably took us a little bit to really get going,” SC head coach Adam Ely said.
The Cougars did get seven first-quarter points from Zander Bigger and four by Blake Tanner, and they led 15-9 after one. Andrew Charlebois got hot for SC in the second, drilling two triples as part of his eight points in the frame. Tanner also scored eight points for the team in the quarter, and they led 37-20 at the half.
Tanner kept the hot hand in the third, hitting a 3 and netting nine points, and it was a 55-28 lead entering the fourth.
Tanner led the Cougars with 23 points, Charlebois netted 10 and Bigger finished with nine. Ryder Kroupa chipped in with seven, Eli Valima scored six, Connor Blomgren added four and Isaac Ferree scored three.
The Bobcats had Dylan Swift score 15 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter. Ethan Swift put in 11, and Steve Norton added four.
While the Bobcats came up short in this one, they felt the game was quite valuable for them.
“It was nice to travel less than half an hour to get to our closest road game of the year,” MBS head coach Paul Johns said. “It was a back-and-forth game for the first quarter and a half when the score was tied at 20, but the Cougars had a 17-0 scoring run to end the half.”
SC also lost a game with Munising on Feb. 13, 64-14. It was one of those nights where nothing went right for the Cougars.
“We lost Kroupa to a concussion on the first possession of the game, and Zander got sick right after that and it was a nightmare start,” Ely said. We never got anything going from there. We didn’t make anything and never got to the line, and it was a rough night for us.”
The Cougars had Charlebois hit three treys, giving him a teamhigh nine points. Tanner netted three points, and Drew Begovac added two.
SC (8-12 overall) had a scheduled home contest with Rock Mid Pen on Monday and played in its last regular season game Thursday at Norway.
The Cougars open Division 4 district play on Wednesday, when they take on Rapid River at Big Bay de Noc.
