Superior Central earns late-season victory over Mid Peninsula, 48-35

The Superior Central boys basketball team was able to pick up a well-played late-season victory last week. The Cougars, hosting Rock Mid Peninsula on Feb. 17, claimed a 48-35 victory.

“We changed things up offensively, as we were playing without Ryder Kroupa from his concussion in the previous week,” SC head coach Adam Ely said. “We were happy with our intent in this game, holding it down without Ryder, and the way we were able to control the game. We only fouled five times to their 14 and shot 13 free throws to their two, and that’s been every game. We average six fouls a game on the season, and opponents only attempt four free throws.”

SC held a 10-8 lead after the opening eight minutes and extended that to 17-11 at the half and 31-21 entering the fourth.

Blake Tanner paced the Cougars with 16 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists. Zander Bigger also played well, recording 15 points and six boards. Andrew Charlebois hit the nets for 11 points.

On Feb. 20, Superior Central dropped a road game in Norway, 64-30.

“Not a good game to play short-handed, as we were still without Ryder,” Ely said. “Fell behind quick and stayed there.”

SC (9-13 overall) had a Division 4 district semifinal game against Rapid River at Big Bay de Noc on Wednesday.

North Dickinson, Big Bay and Mid Pen are on the other side of the bracket, with the semifinal winners meeting tonight (Friday) for the district championship. This district winner moves to Tuesday’s regional semifinal in Kingsford.
