Alger basketball players honored by leagues

High school basketball players across Alger County have received postseason recognition from their various conferences in recent weeks.

Several student-athletes from Munising Baptist School, Munising High School and Superior Central High School have been honored.

Northern Lights League boys In the Northern Lights League, Munising Baptist junior Dylan Swift earned second-team honors. He scored about 28 points per game for the Bobcats and passed the 1,000-point threshold this season.

Ethan Swift received honorable mention in voting by league coaches.

NLL players earning first-team honors were Player of the Year Caden Chromy, Maplewood Baptist sophomore; Jayden Sagataw, Hannahville senior; Carver Day, Maplewood Baptist junior; Henry Lyon, Ojibwe Charter junior; and Nick DesJarden, Big Bay de Noc senior.

Joining Dylan Swift on the Second Team were Dashawn Metzger, Hannahville senior; Vincent Davis, Mackinac Island senior; Parker Pederson, Big Bay de Noc sophomore; and Antonio Mazzella, Ojibwe Charter senior.

Those receiving honorable mention were Nolan Mills, Paradise senior; Jesse Wabinimkee, Hannahville senior; Jordan Fisher, Mackinac Island freshman; Keegan Planck, Paradise senior; Lysander McGinnity, Beaver Island senior; and Lucas Pease, Beaver Island eighth grader.

Skyline Central boys

Three members of the Munising boys basketball team were honored by the Skyline Central Conference.

Seniors Carson Kienitz and Trevor Nolan were named to the First Team, and senior Jack Dusseault was selected to the Second Team. Dusseault and Kienitz were also named to the All-Defensive Team.

Vic Giuliani, a sophomore at Forest Park, was named SCC Player of the Year.

Joining Kienitz and Nolan on the First Team were Kevin Giuliani, Forest Park senior; Cole Baij, Norway senior; Owen Kuehnau, Stephenson senior; Spencer Kramer, North Dickinson junior; and Lane Gorzinski, North Central senior.

Joining Dusseault on the Second Team were Sam Salo, Carney-Nadeau senior; Zack Schwartz, Stephenson senior; Ty King, North Dickinson junior; Trenton Kramer, North Dickinson sophomore; Matt Showers, Forest Park senior; A.J. Gallino, Norway senior; and Brayden Derouin, Bark River-Harris junior.

Receiving honorable mention were Dax Huuki, Forest Park sophomore; Jordan Walters, North Central senior; Kaden Malone, North Central sophomore; Brady Jungwirth, North Dickinson junior; Mason Trudeau, Norway senior; and Bryce Adams, Norway senior.

Showers was the league’s defensive MVP. In addition to Dusseault and Kienitz, the All-Defensive Team included Gorzinski, Malone, Spencer Kramer, Schwartz, Trudeau and Anthony Pineda, a Norway junior.

The SCC Coach of the Year was Jason Price of Forest Park, which advanced to the state semifinals in Division 4.

Skyline Central girls

Three members of the Munising girls basketball team and one player on the Superior Central girls team were honored by the Skyline Central Conference.

For Munising, freshman Addie Bowerman and senior Bailey Corcoran were named to the First Team, and senior Dayne Behning was selected to the Second Team and the All-Defensive Team.

For Superior Central, senior Sammy Johnson was named to the Second Team.

Lauren Adams, a junior at Norway, was named Player of the Year.

Other members of the First Team were Mariska Laurila, Carney-Nadeau senior; Adria Ruleau, Stephenson senior; Lauren Jungwirth, North Dickinson freshman; Elsie Williams, Forest Park junior; and Grace Maule, Carney-Nadeau senior.

Second Team members were Melissa Johnson, Stephenson senior; Marissa Ives, Bark River- Harris senior; Alyson Steinbrecher, North Dickinson freshman; Otradovec, North Central junior; and Raina Ledzian, North Dickinson.

Players receiving honorable mention were Hope Varoni, Bark River-Harris senior; Emma Zawada, Bark River-Harris sophomore; Audrey Williams, Forest Park freshman; Aubrey Waara-Shamion, Forest Park freshman; Jessa Rossler, Norway sophomore; Emma Sundling, Rapid River senior; Alana Strahl, Stephenson senior; and Maddie Vista, Stephenson senior.

Laurila was the Defensive MVP. Other members of the All-Defensive Team were Ives, Elsie Williams, Ledzian, Abby Richter (Norway senior), Faith Cappaert (Stephenson junior), Jungwirth and Varoni.

Kirk Mattson of North Dickinson was named Coach of the Year.

Central U.P. Conference boys Four members of the Superior Central boys team, which won the Central U.P. Conference with a 5-1 league record, earned recognition by the conference.

For the Cougars, junior Blake Tanner earned a spot on the First Team; senior Zander Bigger and sophomore Ryder Kroupa were named to the Second Team; and sophomore Andrew Charlebois received honorable mention. In addition, Bigger was named to the Defensive Team.

Senior Ethan Harris of Rapid River was named Player of the Year.

Other members of the First Team were Nick DesJarden, Big Bay de Noc senior; Parker Pederson, Big Bay de Noc sophomore; and Lane Olson, Rapid River sophomore.

Selected to the Second Team were Dane Micheau, Mid Peninsula junior; Cyler Brunngraeber, Mid Peninsula sophomore; and Eddie Forslund, Rapid River senior.

Receiving honorable mention were Mason Gembel, Big Bay de Noc freshman; Lewis Holmes, Mid Peninsula freshman; Rowen Flath, Rapid River sophomore; and Tanner Peterson, Big Bay de Noc freshman.

In addition to Bigger, members of the Defensive Team were Des-Jarden, Pederson and Holmes.

Carl Brunngraeber of Mid Peninsula was named Coach of the Year.

Central U.P. Conference girls Four Superior Central girls earned CUP All-Conference recognition, and the Cougars’ head coach, Skip Rutter, was named Coach of the Year.

Superior Central senior Sammy Johnson and sophomore Peyton Adams were selected to the First Team, while junior Addie Frusti was named to the Second Team. Junior Marissa Strohm earned selection to the Defensive Team.

The CUP Player of the Year was Big Bay de Noc junior Caragan Thill.

Other members of the First Team were Aubrey Olson, Rapid River junior, and Lila Morris, Big Bay de Noc senior.

Named to the Second Team were Payton Pederson, Big Bay de Noc sophomore; Abbigale Klee, Mid Peninsula sophomore; Kellyn Gustafson, Rapid River sophomore; and Tatum Harvey, Big Bay de Noc senior.

Three players received honorable mention: Emma Sundling, Rapid River senior; Kaia Branstrom, Mid Peninsula eighth grader; and Sarah Beauchaine, Rapid River sophomore.

Joining Strohm on the Defensive Team were Pederson, Harvey and Olson.
