The Superior Central softball team is doing the best it can inside while waiting for the unpredictable weather to improve.
Better temperatures are looming, so it’s only a matter of time before the Cougars can turn their attention to game action.
“Our field is probably at least two weeks away, but we have some 50 [degree days] coming,” head coach Rich Swajanen said.
Swajanen said he hopes to get some games in the southern Upper Peninsula as the team waits for local playing conditions to become more favorable.
“We’ve been in the gym the whole time,” Swajanen said. “We are working on our hitting for sure. We’ve been hitting live pitching in the cage and the pitching machine, of course. We’re working on our defense, throwing balls, where to go with it. Can’t really do much backup or anything in the gym. You just have to use your heads to imagine where the ball is going to go, get back there and back it up.”
On the roster this year will be Peyton Adams, Kianna Perron, Sammy Johnson, Lillian Lindgren, Ruth Johnson, Kylie Stover, Hope Brunngraeber, Payton Latvala, Marlene Johnson, Kiera McDonnald, Alina Kolpack, Janessa Perron, Addie Frusti, Aiyana Takey and Rory Hancock.
“I think Sammy [Johnson] is looking good,” Swajanen said. “She’s throwing her off-speed really nice. She did really well last year; she’s a senior now, and I think she is going to be a topnotch pitcher this year.
“We have most of our players back. We only lost two girls to graduation. We have girls that have been in the infield for awhile now; they’ve all got good gloves, and they know how to play the game. We have five freshmen, and they are looking pretty good too.”
Superior Central was scheduled to play at Carney-Nadeau on Tuesday and is slated to play at Marquette on Monday.
“[We want to] win our conference; that would be nice,” Swajanen said. “We would have to get past Norway. There’s a lot of good teams there like Bark River, Crystal Falls, all those teams. It would be nice if we could take our district and play well in regionals; we’ll just try to win every game, I guess.”
