Three different flights won championships, and the Munising tennis team took second overall at the Division 2 U.P. Finals in Kingsford on May 28.
The Mustangs finished with 14 points, just three behind U.P. champion West Iron County.
“This was a great day of tennis for the team, and I am so proud of all my players,” head coach Corinne Hoffman said. “I had a blast this season with the guys.”
Carson Kienitz won the U.P. championship in No. 1 singles, and Danny Goss won the U.P. title at No. 2 singles. Nolan Dolaskie and Blake Tyner took the title in No. 3 doubles.
“Carson cruised through the matches,” Hoffman said. “Going into the day, I saw that Carson was focused on doing his best and had his eye on first place. This was his fourth time getting first place [at U.P. Finals]. In other words, he went his [entire] high school tennis career as a U.P. champion. Danny has a go-with-a-flow personality. His opponents he played would throw stuff at him, but it did not phase Danny. He played his game, which led him to first place. He kept his head level and let his opponents get frustrated because Danny would always get their ball back over, so they were forced to make the error. So proud of them both. What a way to finish their high school tennis careers.”
She added her thoughts on Dolaskie and Tyner winning in doubles as well.
“This was both of their first time competing in U.P. Finals for tennis,” she said. “These two were doubles partners last year through the season. They have a solid dynamic, which led to great communication on the court. They have a great one-two combo — meaning a solid baseline player and net player. They also fought for each point. I look forward to the years to come with these two. They have a promising future in doubles for Munising tennis.”
Jack Carlson and Scout Linsenman-McSheehy won a match in No. 1 doubles, and Carter Rautanen and Caiden Curtis also won a match in No. 2 doubles.
