Earth Fest features Mather Elementary Students & Artwork

Mather Elementary 3rd grade Native American Education students will be participating in Earth Fest 2024, hosted by the partnership between Alger County Renewable Energy Solutions, Munising School Public Library, and the Gallery Coffee Co. with sponsorship from the Michigan Environmental Council. Native American Education teacher, Carol Horne, rose to the challenge of having an Earth Day themed lesson that would result in something to display at the library. The class read “We are the Water Protectors” by Carole Lindstrom. From there, the students created pictures that will be displayed at the library during Earth Fest Week, April 22-27. Mrs. Horne added, “The 3rd grade students are enthusiastic about showing what natural resource they want to protect and why”. The public is invited to view the artwork and other exhibits throughout the week during library hours. For more information contact the Munising School Public Library at (906)387-2125.

Munising Mustang’s Excellence in Education

Excellence in Education is a scholarship program run through Grow and Lead, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works towards helping youth, adults, and communities in the U.P. Based in Marquette, it organizes fundraisers to raise money for these scholarships throughout Marquette and Alger Counties. Most years two are given per school, however this year other area schools did not have enough seniors who met the requirements so three Munising students, Angus Horne, Alex Goss, and Cienna Schultz, were chosen to receive the award. Each student will receive a $1,500 scholarship and recognition for being in the top 5% of the class. A ceremony will be held at North Michigan University on April 29 where approximately 350 educators, students, and parents will attend to celebrate the students during a banquet in their honor.
