The Munising High School girls basketball team captured a Division 4 district championship last Friday with a 62-23 home victory over Big Bay de Noc. In the semifinal game one night earlier, the Mustangs knocked off Rapid River, 78-16. Munising’s season, however, came to an end Monday night in Kingsford. In a regional semifinal, the Mustangs fell to Norway, 4541. Munising finishes with a 20-5 record and two trophies. In addition to the district title, the team also captured the Skyline Central Conference championship. See Page 10 for details.

For much of the night, the Munising boys basketball team’s district-opening home game with Menominee on Feb. 26 was playing out as planned.

Playing three games in four nights can be quite the tall order. The Munising girls basketball team played well in just such a stretch, though, winning two of three, including a convincing 65-30 senior night home win over Manistique on Feb. 27.

Two Munising High School student-athletes, seniors Dayne Behning and Trevor Nolan, have been named recipients of the prestigious Michigan High School Athletic Association/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Award.

Entering its game at Rapid River on Feb. 20, the Munising girls basketball team had lost three of its previous four contests. The Mustangs got back on track in a big way in this contest, dominating the Rockets to claim a 63-13 victory.
