The Michigan Ice Fest, one of the premier ice climbing events in the U.S., continues over the weekend. Numerous events, shows and more are spread out between Alger Parks and Rec, local businesses and outdoor locations. Locals will brave the cold weather and water in the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Michigan on Saturday at East Channel Brewing Company. The event starts at noon and will run throughout the afternoon to raise money for Special Olympics.
Relic Ride set for Saturday
The 31st Annual Relic Ride is set for Saturday, starting at the Jack Pine on M-94. The event brings in thousands of snowmobiles from multiple states. Judging for sleds from 1973 or older will start at 10 a.m. but doors open at 8.
Free riding weekend from DNR In the first of its kind, the DNR is doing a free snowmobile weekend for riders on Saturday and Sunday. The two-day period of Feb. 11-12 will hopefully attract riders who haven’t been on the trails for a while and for out-of-state riders to check out Michigan trails.
Pancake breakfast Saturday
The Rotary Club of Munising is hosting a pancake breakfast on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 7:30 a.m.noon. The event will help raise money for new uniforms for the Munising Middle/High School band. The breakfast will be held at the middle/ high school cafeteria.
Jazz band performs for Valentine’s Day The Munising High School jazz band will play at Gallery Coffee Company on Tuesday, Feb. 14 for the Valentine’s Day holiday. The event will include a fundraiser silent auction and the performance will be livestreamed on the Gallery Coffee Company’s Facebook page.
Rock River advances partial STR ban In a 3-2 vote, the Rock River Township Planning Commission voted to ban short-term rentals, which is defined as a “tourist rental” in the township’s zoning ordinance. The ban is limited to RP 10, which is the township’s largest by square mileage and most rural and would not impact or prevent any legal rentals in other zones. The voting came after a public hearing on Monday, Feb. 6 at the township hall in Chatham. Before the ban could go into effect, the township board would have to approve the language at its next regular meeting.
Circuit Court postponed for illness The 11th Circuit Court postponed its motion day on Wednesday, Feb. 8, due to illness. Numerous cases were adjourned to a later date, including a motion for a correction of sentence for Jason David Sadowski. It also included a Cobbs hearing for Clifford Lawrence Kaja, who was the Gladstone man caught in the cybersting at a Munising hotel, and the unpaid tax collection for 2020 on behalf of the county. Hearings were shifted to March 22, 2023, as the next available date.
Three Yoopers named to NMU Board Brigitte LaPointe-Dunham of Baraga, Steve Lindberg of Marquette, and Greg Toutant of Negaunee were appointed to the Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The three will start their appointments next week. All three are NMU alumni and work in government and healthcare.
