100 years ago – The Munising News – Aug. 31, 1923 Pair goes to American Legion convention
John Schilling and A.E. Lupien returned yesterday from Ironwood where they went as delegates to the American Legion convention. Mr. Schilling and Mr. Lupien were elected members of the state executive committee and Thos. J. Prouex was made a member of the state entertainment committee.
80 years ago – The Munising News – Sept. 3, 1943 Survivors of Escanaba are visitors here
Raymond O’Malley and Melvin Baldwin, only survivors of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter, Escanaba, sunk on convoy duty in the Atlantic, appeared in the Mather high school auditorium last night under sponsorship of the Alger County War Finance committee.
The men are making a tour of the Upper Peninsula in the interests of the Third War Loan, the bond sale for which will officially begin on Thursday, Sept. 6. The two seamen were introduced by George Baldwin, Alger county prosecutor, and music was furnished by the Mather high school orchestra.
They were due to leave this morning for Manistique.
50 years ago – The Munising News – Aug. 30, 1973 First National Rural Development Conference held in Munising
Munising has been selected as the site for the first National Rural Development Conference to be held in the nation. It is scheduled for Wed-Frid, Oct. 3-5. Announcement of Munising’s selection for this first national conference was made jointly on Friday of last week by Munising city officials and officials of the Lake Superior Research and Development Institute. The city will be working in cooperation with officials of the institute in hosting the conference here.
25 years ago – The Munising News – Sept. 2, 1998 MMH breaks ground on two new buildings
A new medical clinic and assisted living center are being added to the campus at Munising Memorial Hospital. The 6,000 square feet medical clinic will provide needed office space for four physicians, including MMH’s newest physician Dr. Schumaker. The 10,000 square foot assisted living center will be home to at least 16 area residents.
10 years ago – The Munising News – Sept. 4, 2013 Trenary Co-op mulls move by Amanda Ingraham
After almost 95 years in its downtown location, the Trenary Farmers’ Cooperative Store is considering a change in venue.
The grocery store has been located on Trenary Avenue since 1919, just about one block south of M-67. Co-op stockholders are now wondering how to boost the store’s flow of customers and how to remain solvent in the future.
