The Hiawathaland District Klondike Derby was held on January 28, 2023, at Camp Hiawatha on Bunting Lake east of Chatham. The day started with about 14 degrees with fresh snow, but no wind made the day very promising. Over one hundred and forty Scouts and Webelos with their adult leaders took part in the annual outdoor fun. The theme of this year’s Derby is, “Gold Rush Days” where the Scouts and Webelos were challenged with events brought back from historic times up in the Yukon. Scouts “visited” the historic Dyea, Skagway, Dawson Creek, Chilkoot Pass, and Back to Dyea.

There was tension in the air on Wednesday night when 15 fifth-eighth grade Superior Central students gathered in front of their families to compete in Superior Central’s first spelling bee. This competition served as the first step for these students on their journey to the U.P. Spelling Bee that will be held in early March. After 12 rounds of words, seventh grader Aiyana Taskey was named the overall champion with the correct spelling of “affirmative” and the championship word of “marina”.

Book Owls Family Reading Night will take place on Tues. Feb. 7 at 5:30 p.m. at the library. This Great Start Collaborative led program is open to all families of young children and meets monthly on the first Tuesday. The state’s supplemental budget bill was signed Tuesday morning, Jan. 31 in Lansing, with a major private enterprise project receiving $200 million. The funding will be used to help the Billerud paper make necessary improvements to make newer products needed in multiple industries.

In what could have been a culturally and financially devastating event of vandalism, the snow base at the Chatham Ski Hill has been repaired. According to ski hill manager Trevor Case, the hill is as good as it can be given the circumstances and safe for local skiers, snowboarders and sledders.
