Birding shore to shore

A recent cooperative venture has resulted in an exciting new opportunity for birdwatchers in the eastern Upper Peninsula. With the help of several partners, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has developed the Shore-to-Shore Birding Trail, which is a driving/walking/birding experience that covers more than 400 miles and 40 birding points of interest throughout parts of Chippewa, Schoolcraft, Luce and Mackinac counties.

How to get your tree from the Hiawatha National Forest

As the holiday season approaches, if you are looking for the perfect weekend family activity, the Hiawatha National Forest would like to suggest Holiday tree gathering. Permits are available online at recreation. gov for the holiday season, just $5 a piece plus a $2.50 service fee. Purchase information and details about designated cutting areas, dates and types of trees that may be cut can be found at: www.recreation. gov/tree-permits/hiawatha.

MPS asks City for easement

Munising Public Schools is closer to selling a piece of lakeshore property, if they want to sell it that is. At the Munising City Commission meeting on Monday, November 21, the city commission voted in favor of allowing the city manager and attorney to get an estimate for an easement into a parcel near Munising Middle/High School.

Norse Run Away Late

For the third weekend in a row the Norse Women’s Basketball Team (3-3) split their weekend games, picking up a win over the Minnesota-North Itasca Vikings (0-7) by a final score of 57-36 in the DQ Classic hosted by Vermilion Community College.

Tech takes two CCHA honors

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) has announced its Players of the Week for the games of November 18-19 and four student-athletes from three different programs have been recognized. Nathan Burke (Bowling Green) earned Forward of the Week, while Brett Thorne (Michigan Tech) and Kyle Kukkonen (Michigan Tech) were named Defenseman and Rookie of the Week, respectively. Noah Giesbrecht (Ferris State) was the conference’s Goaltender of the Week.

New JV hockey team earns first win

The newly formed high school JV Hockey team took the ice for their first set of games this weekend. Just like the Emeralds Varsity Co-op, the JV team is made up of players from Manistique, Newberry, and Munising. Players participated in the high school tryouts at the start of November and were slotted onto the team by coaches in the program.
