Munising Downtown Development Authority Empowers Local Businesses with Beautification and Facade Grants

In a bid to enhance the aesthetic appeal of Munising’s downtown, the Munising Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is once again rolling out its eagerly anticipated DDA Beautification Grant program. This initiative, along with its long-standing Building Facade Grant Program, aims to uplift the visual allure of the city while supporting local businesses.

Munising Drama Club’s production of ‘Murder on the 518’

The Munising Drama Club’s production of ‘Murder on the 518’ on March 20th and 21st left audiences captivated with its riveting performances. Director Joleen St. Amour expressed her heartfelt gratitude, stating, “We are so grateful that so many people came to see the show. This was one of the best showings we’ve had since I’ve been the director.” Assisting St. Amour were Assistant Directors Kelsey Maxon and Jasmyn Hallford, whose contributions were instrumental in the production’s success. The talented cast, including Brynlee Meyer, Duray Murk, Braeden Hallford, Natalia St. Amour, Will Wilson, Nathan Petersen, Tori Butler, Makalah Fishburn, Camdyn Schultz, Dylan Cornish, Ethan Petersen, Kelvin McNally, Alison Niemi, Keira Albright, Addie Bowerman, Cleo Witty, Natalie Holmes-Niven, Juliana Smith, and Hazelyn Winsor. Behind the scenes, a dedicated crew, comprising Carly Reffruschinni, Destiny Andrews, Evon Goss, Sophia Anderson, Sierra Dyer, Rylee Beauchaine, Jackson Carlson, Lilly LeGrand, Natalie Hermann, Macy Heyrman, Katy Richards, Teaghan Ballas, and Orin Shalo. Looking ahead, St. Amour announced, “We will be turning right around to begin our Spring play when we come back from break.”

Earth Fest 2024 Expands

Munising’s second Earth Fest partnership between Alger County Renewable Energy Solutions and Munising School Public Library, has expanded to include the Gallery Coffee Co. with sponsorship from the Michigan Environmental Council. This year’s events will include weekly Armchair Trips to explore the Earth’s flora and fauna through film media. Nature movies will be screened, one a week, at the Gallery Coffee Co. located at 120 Elm Ave, Munising. They are scheduled on Tuesdays, April 2, 9, 16 and 23 beginning at 10 AM.

Allen Frances Boutilier

Allen Frances Boutilier, age 78, of Moran, Michigan, died at his home on March 16, 2024. He was born on May 13, 1945, in Saline, Michigan, to Hartley and Katherine (Butler) Boutilier. Allen grew up in Taylor, Michigan. He met Catherine Brandly, and they married on July 18, 1964. They moved to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in 1971 and settled in Munising, Michigan. In 1982, Allen opened his own business, Northern Michigan Log Homes, and then opened Boutilier &Son Building Company in 1985 with his son Timothy. He loved building beautiful log homes, and built several in the Munising Bay Area, as well as 16 Mile Lake. He took great pride in his work and was well known for his beautiful craftsmanship.

Robert James Hughes, Sr., age 90, of Grand Marais, Michigan, passed away at his home, in the loving care of his wife, Nancy, on March 20, 2024. Bob was born in Owosso, Michigan on August 11, 1933, to John Henry and Dora (Preston) Hughes, Jr.
