Michigan cuts cable at record rate

Residents across Michigan are cutting cable at record rates, according to a new report from the Michigan Public Service Commission. The annual report issued on February 1 says that over 151,000 households — or roughly four percent statewide — have cut the cord. Based on population, this would essentially translate to the entirety of the Upper Peninsula canceling cable television in 2022.

Rock River confirms partial STR ban

The Rock River Township board confirmed that they would stand by the planning commission decision to enact a partial ban on short term rentals (STRs) in the township’s most rural zone. The ban in RP 10, a zone created by the township’s zoning ordinance that requires 10 acres per parcel and is not bordering any major county roads or snowmobile trails.

County approves labor change

The Alger County Commission approved a controversial notice regarding courthouse staff working hours after the county’s labor attorney teleconferenced in about potential risks. For the second meeting in a row, the county commission had “approve notice of discontinuation of working through lunch period” as an agenda item.

Outhouse Classic this Saturday The 31st annual Trenary Outhouse Classic will run this Saturday in Downtown Trenary. Registration begins at 11 a.m. before races start at 2 p.m.. The event will host over 1,000 viewers in the small Alger community with fan buses coming from both Marquette and Escanaba.

No snow for UP 200

The UP 200, the largest sled dog race in the lower 48, has been canceled by race organizers. The Upper Peninsula Sled Dog Association (UPSDA) cited deteriorating weather conditions and safety concerns for participants, spectators and volunteer for why the event will not happen.
