Looking ahead in April, remember to mark your calendar for events surrounding Earth Fest 2023, which will be running Apr. 17 - Apr.

An allegedly unconstitutional policy by a downstate prison may significantly cost Alger County taxpayers in the aftermath of one of its most heartbreaking events and potentially create a ripple effect that would negatively impact dozens of Upper Peninsula citizens in their right to representation.

The Public Health Delta & Menominee Counties (PHDM) is actively investigating an outbreak of blastomycosis that has been linked to the Escanaba Billerud Paper Mill. To date, there have been 14 confirmed cases of blastomycosis, a fungal infection, identified.

Upper Peninsula Power Company has received approval from the Michigan Public Service Commission for a settlement agreement that resolves the company’s rate review case. As part of the agreement, low-income customers will benefit from a residential income assistance credit applied to their monthly bills, and the company will make a corporate donation of $200,000 to non-profit organizations that serve low-income citizens.

Lenten services held before Easter Additional services are being held at numerous Alger County churches heading into the Christian holy week before Easter. Sunday, April 2 will be Palm Sunday with other various days and practices recognized by different denominations of the Christian faith. Double check with the church for additional information about extra services. The Munising Beacon will publish on Good Friday, April 7, as scheduled.
