100 years ago - The Munising News - Sept. 28, 1923 Chicago-based steamer breaks down near Grand Island Enroute from Duluth to Chicago, about eight miles east of Grand Island, a cylinder on the steamer Rotarian broke, crippling the vessel. It was towed into the Marquette harbor by the U.S. Lighthouse Tender Amaranth. The Rotarian, a side-wheeler, formerly owned by the Clow-Nickolson Transportation company, was bound for Chicago to be delivered to purchases who were to operate her as a pleasure boat.

Six defendants dismissed in Alger Correctional death

Involuntary manslaughter charges have been dropped against six former Alger Correctional Facility staff members after 93rd District Court Judge Charles Nebel ruled to not bound over the group of defendants on Monday, Sept. 25 at the Alger County Courthouse. The ruling comes after the state failed to produce enough evidence to prove that the six were directly responsible for the death of inmate Johnathan Lancaster in 2019.

Kewadin Casinos suing former attorneys after settlement

The Kewadin Casinos Gaming Authority announced today that it has formally moved forward with its malpractice lawsuit against former legal counsel Patterson, Earnhart, Real Bird & Wilson LLP for its mismanagement of the casino’s legal dispute with former development partners JLLJ Development and Lansing Future Development II. Kewadin is represented by Daniel V. Barnett of Grewal Law PLLC and Lawrence J. Acker of Lawrence J. Acker, P.C.

Pizza with a Purpose continues Pizza with a Purpose, one of the largest fundraisers for Alger County Communities that Care (AC3), continues today at Pictured Rocks Pizza in Munising. Proceeds from the annual event will help fund social work initiatives in Alger County Schools.

No consolidation for Grand Island

By a 3-2 vote, the Grand Island Township board has voted to stay as its own independent township and step away from any consolidation plans with Munising Township. The decision comes after Grand Island resident Don Belusar announced that he would serve as township clerk after Dave Kronk retires from the position in December.

Richard Carl Hansen, age 88, resident of Big Rapids, Petoskey, and Bay View, Michigan died September 12, 2023. He was born April 22, 1935 in Detroit, Michigan son of Ede and Bertha Hansen.
