100 Years Ago – the Munising News – December 14th, 1923 Santa Will Not Forget the Poor The Welfare Committee of The Woman’s Club has been in touch with Kris Kringle this holiday season, making sure that Santa Claus is not going to forget any Munising boy or girl this Christmas eve. The club canvassed the city and has found over 50 children who were not on Santa’s list. Through the efforts of the Club, this condition is to be transformed. Every last one of these children is to receive a stocking filled with toys and goodies this Christmas.

The Alger County Community Chorus presented a Christmas Cantata entitled “The Road to Bethlehem” by Lloyd Larson on Sunday, December 10, at 3:00 pm, Mather Auditorium. The Cantata was narrated by Chuck Mannisto, Zach Peterson on drums, Joyce Kelto Oas accompanying/ directing. Also taking part in this concert was “Joyful Noise” kid’s choir, directed/accompanied by Julie LaFlamme & Grace Veneberg & featuring guitarist Brad Veneberg; “The Gospel Guys”; soloist Josh Farmer; and “Rejoice!” ladies group.

Heating with wood is not only a passion, for some, but also environmentally smart and helps keep dollars local. Down to only a single winter’s worth of seasoned firewood, it was time to buy another truckload, which is around ten to twelve cords.

The Lake Superior Chapter of Finlandia Foundation National will hold its annual Independence Day/ Christmas party on Saturday, December 16, from 1 to 3 pm in the Magnuson Hall of Messiah Lutheran Church, located at 305 W. Magnetic Street in Marquette. All are welcome. There will be refreshments, and opportunities for Finnish conversation and learning about the Finnish Independence Day and Christmas celebrations. Starry Starry Night, the annual community event held on Black Friday, was successful on Friday, Nov. 24. With equal parts economic stimulus and cultural heritage, the event brought hundreds of people to Grand Marais to celebrate the holidays.
