According to the Michigan State Police, the police activity at Foggy’s Steakhouse in Christmas was not a drug raid by the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET). An incident occurring on Sunday, October 30 was rumored to be a drug bust at the property, but further depiction should come next week from official sources.
No one matched all six numbers to win Wednesday night’s Powerball jackpot, giving Michigan Lottery players a chance at a $1.5 billion jackpot in Saturday’s drawing. The cash option stands at $746 million.

When I say we have a lot going on at the school, that might in fact be an understatement. In thinking of topics for this month’s superintendent’s corner I couldn’t pick just one thing to write about. Instead, I went in the opposite direction. I’ve decided to highlight as many things as I could think of so that you can get a sense of just how much we have to offer at our humble little school. North Shore Needles, the library knit and stitch group will start meeting again at the library on Fridays at 10 am. Bring your knitting, crochet work, embroidery or whichever needle project you are working on and join in on the conversation. The library carries Interweave Knits Magazine and has numerous other resources to help you grow as a needle artist if you are just starting out. Don’t forget that the library also needs donated items for the Mitten and Hat Tree in December—a perfect opportunity to use your needle skills.

The 2022 Skyline Central Conference Volleyball Awards were released Wednesday before the second round of the MHSAA District Tournament. The 14U State Savings Bank Hockey team, made of skaters from Newberry, Manistique, and Munising, wasted no time getting back on the ice and getting their season going. As soon as many of the team members’ fall sports seasons wrapped up, the team got together and jumped right into game action.
The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) has announced its Players of the Week for the games of October 2829 and four student-athletes from four different programs have been recognized. Louis Boudon (Lake Superior State) was named Forward of the Week, while Jake Livingstone (Minnesota State) earned Defenseman of the Week honors. Blake Pietila (Michigan Tech) was named Goaltender of the Week and Beni Halasz (Northern Michigan) was tabbed Rookie of the Week. CCHA Forward of the Week: Louis Boudon, Sr., Lake Superior State (Grenoble, France) Boudon paced all CCHA skaters with three goals and an assist last week for four points, helping the Lakers to a split with Clarkson. The Lake Superior State captain recorded one goal on the power play, one shorthanded and one at even-strength, with league-highs in face-off wins (28) and shots on goal (11), while posting a +3 for the weekend.

The Munising Mustangs (9-0) will be hosting their first playoff game against the Norway Knights (6-3) at Mustang Stadium on Friday, October 28. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.. Broadcasts will be provided by 97.7 WQXO for the Munising coverage while a digital audio stream through The Newberry News/EUP Sports Network will give the Newberry side. All online video broadcasts are through the NFHS Network app or website.
