
The Superior Central track and field teams concluded their seasons at the MHSAA U.P. Division 3 finals on Saturday, June 3 in Kingsford, with the boys team finishing 17th and the girls finishing 16th of the over 30 schools in the field. It was the first time since 2018 that both boys and girls teams scored points at the finals.
Munising residents will see a major change to garbage collection after a new proposal was approved by the city commission. At the regular meeting on Wednesday, June 7, the city commission approved a five-year contract with GFL Environmental, the Toronto-based company that operates the Wood Island landfill after buying out Great American Disposal.
Alger County has sufficient funds to cover any losses related to a class-action lawsuit regarding foreclosed property sale surpluses, according to Alger County Treasurer Pam Johnson. “The county has the money to cover the worst-case scenario,” Johnson said.

The Munising City Volunteer Fire Department extinguished a small grass fire near the All-Veterans Memorial in Bayshore Park on Monday, June 5. The fire was located on the East side of a small storage building directly behind the memorial. According to MVFD Chief Red Anderson, there was no determined cause of the fire. Witnesses at the scene saw people smoking near the area where the blaze ignited, but there was no evidence to prove that is how the fire started. The fire occurred during the Munising Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market at the other end of the park, but there were no injuries or significant damages reported.

The Munising City Commission approved two economic development zones to further the progress of two downtown developments. Conducting public hearings at the start of the regular bimonthly meeting on Wednesday, June 7 at Munising City Hall, the city commission voted in favor of creating an Obsolete Property Rehabilitation District for the old city fire hall at the corner of Munising Avenue and Lynn Street and a Commercial Redevelopment District for the Munising Marketplace project on Superior Street between Birch and Maple Streets.

Two federal agencies continue to deal with a forest fire near Lost Lake in Munising Township. Roughly a dozen firefighters from the U.S. Forest System and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are finishing extinguishing the three-acre fire on both public and private land.

In a pitching duel, the Superior Central Cougars defeated the Bark River-Harris Broncos 1-0 at the Superior Central baseball field in Eben Junction on Tuesday, May 30. Two pitchers combined for the shutout, with Blake Walther getting the win and Trent Rutter getting the save for the Cougars.
