Drug take back in Grand Marais Sunday Those looking to safely discard old medications are welcome to stop by the Drug Take Back event at the Burt Township Community Center in Grand Marais on Sunday,April 16 from noon-3 p.m.. Any pills, capsules, patches, lancets or sharps will be accepted, including veterinary medicines. The event is sponsored locally by LMAS, AC3, EUP-ORC and Alger County Sheriff’s Office along with statewide organizations.

Mustangs return to the diamond

Munising has not fielded a softball team for a full season since 2019. With the pandemic and lack of numbers, getting a team together for 2023 was the first challenge. Now goals of improvement, sportsmanship and winning are achievable.

Alumni take over tennis team

More new leadership is coming to the Mustang tennis program, but it comes with familiar faces. Taking over the boys tennis team this Spring will be Munising alumni Noah Ackerman and Chase Nebel.

Tale Spinners Storytime will be Earth Day themed on Mon. Apr. 17 at 10:30 as the first official event for Earth Fest. Pre-school aged children and their caregivers are invited to attend to hear stories, sing songs and make a simple craft as we celebrate our Earth. This 30 minute activity is for ages 7 and under.

Passed resolutions wrong idea This letter is in response to two resolutions adopted by your county Board of Commissioners at their April 10th meeting. The two resolutions, #202307 and #2023-08 were put forth under the guise of protecting your right to bear arms, often portrayed as ‘freedom’. There has been much debate, discussion and division about this topic, prompted by the dramatic rise in mass shootings across our country.

Michigan’s economy needs to catch up

While 25 other states have fully recovered the jobs they lost during the pandemic, Michigan is still down 71,400 jobs, a 1.6 percent decrease. It doesn’t look like the state is going to get above pre-pandemic levels any time soon, either. The state won’t recover the jobs lost until 2026 at the rate of growth we have experienced over the past five months.

Special education millage on May ballot

Voters in Alger and Marquette Counties will decide on a 20-year Special Education Millage Proposal, as part of the May 2023 election. If approved, the millage will cost the average homeowner 42 cents per day, based on a home value of $200,000, according to Marquette-Alger Regional Educational Service Agency (MARESA).

Billerud temporarily shuts down Escanaba mill

Billerud has announced that it will temporarily close its Escanaba mill for up to three weeks as it investigates the blastomycosis fungal infection outbreak among its workers. The company said the decision was made to protect employees and contractors’ health and safety.
