
The Alger Conservation District held its annual meeting on Thursday, March 23 at Gallery Coffee Company. Voter attendance was less than half compared to 2022, but it was already scheduled before the MHSAA semifinal game. It was primarily an informational meeting, but board members were elected. John Highlen was elected to a four-year term and elected chairman of the board. Hans Eriksen was elected to a two-year term to replace Diane Kay Hougaboom and Hilary Ludecke will replace Liz Weiner in a one-year term. All ran unopposed and were elected unanimously.

A team-based victory, focused on fundamentals, pushed the Munising Mustangs past the Marine City Cardinal Mooney Cardinals 54-44 at the MHSAA Division 4 Semifinals on Thursday, March 23. Munising wasted no time getting on the board as Trevor Nolan popped a three pointer just 18 seconds into the contest.

In what has been nicknamed ‘The Shot’, Munising senior Cully Trzeciak put the Munising Mustangs back on top in the fourth quarter of the MHSAA Division 4 state championship game. “As soon as I released it, it felt like it was going in,” he said.

Alger County residents that took off for the MHSAA Final Four missed one of the most colorful showcases of the Northern Lights in recent memory. On Thursday and Friday, March 23-24, the Northern Lights showcased green, purple and even red across the Upper Peninsula and Northern Lower Peninsula.

Lenten services held before Easter Additional services are being held at numerous Alger County churches heading into the Christian holy week before Easter. Sunday, April 2 will be Palm Sunday with other various days and practices recognized by different denominations of the Christian faith. Upper Peninsula Power Company has received approval from the Michigan Public Service Commission for a settlement agreement that resolves the company’s rate review case. As part of the agreement, low-income customers will benefit from a residential income assistance credit applied to their monthly bills, and the company will make a corporate donation of $200,000 to non-profit organizations that serve low-income citizens.
The Public Health Delta & Menominee Counties (PHDM) is actively investigating an outbreak of blastomycosis that has been linked to the Escanaba Billerud Paper Mill. To date, there have been 14 confirmed cases of blastomycosis, a fungal infection, identified.
An allegedly unconstitutional policy by a downstate prison may significantly cost Alger County taxpayers in the aftermath of one of its most heartbreaking events and potentially create a ripple effect that would negatively impact dozens of Upper Peninsula citizens in their right to representation.
