What Are Cover Crops?

Have you heard about cover crops but not aren’t sure what that term means, what purpose they serve, or how to use them within your garden or agricultural cropping system? Cover crops are a “temporary” crop grown to improve soil health and fertility; they are not grown for consumption. Cover cropping has been a strategy used by farmers since ancient times and there are many reasons to incorporate this farming technique today. Cover crops can increase soil fertility and organic matter, improve soil structure and water infiltration, prevent soil erosion, benefit pollinator species, and limit pest and disease outbreaks.

Mustangs compete at MHSAA individual finals

The wrestling season has come to a close, with Munising’s last two wrestlers falling in the MHSAA Individual Wrestling Tournament at Ford Field on Saturday, March 4. The Mustangs sent down two wrestlers, senior Reagan Bowerman in the 150 pound division and junior Andrew Cain in the 126 division.

Damron receives life-saving award

Shalynn Damron was recognized by the City of Munising for actions she took to save another local resident at the Munising City Commission meeting on Wednesday, March 1. “Shalynn put herself in harms way to save another human life, and for these reasons I would like to present her with this Life Saving Award,” Munising City Police Chief John Nelson said.

Hockey season ends in the Soo

The incredible second season of varsity hockey for the Manistique Emeralds came to a sad, sudden end in the MHSAA regional semifinals at Sault Ste. Marie Friday night. The Emeralds, who advanced to the second game of the playoffs for the first time after beating Negaunee in a pre-regional qualifying game, came up just short in an intense battle with the Blue Devils. They fell 2-1, seeing their season wrap up with an overall record of 18-7-1.

Mustangs, Cougars to all-SCC teams

The Skyline Central Conference has released its all-conference awards for the girls basketball season, with players from both Munising and Superior Central represented. The two Alger County schools had three all-conference selections, two more honorable mentions and a spot on the all-SCC Defensive Team.

Boys District 101 preview

The MHSAA boys basketball district pairings were announced on Sunday, Feb. 26, with local squads facing unusual opponents in the district tournament. Unlike the girls bracket, the boys will be played in a traditional bracket formula with all games played at Big Bay de Noc.

Mustangs win SCC with win at Norway

The Munising Mustangs are Skyline Central Conference champions, finishing an undefeated conference schedule after beating the Norway Knights 7065 in Norway on Tuesday. “It was a big game, essentially it was a conference championship game,” Munising Head Coach Terry Kienitz said.

It all comes down to this

The showdown is set with Alger County’s biggest rivals meeting up in the district championship game once again. The Munising Mustangs (15-5) will travel to Eben Junction and face Superior Central (12-7) for the District 100 championship after both teams comfortably won their semifinal on Wednesday.
