
Wrestling is back on the mat as the Alger County Youth Wrestling program has started for the 2022-23 season. Fifteen elementary kids from Munising, Superior Central and Au Train-Onota came to try the sport.

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) has announced its Players of the Week for the games of November 18-19 and four student-athletes from three different programs have been recognized. Nathan Burke (Bowling Green) earned Forward of the Week, while Brett Thorne (Michigan Tech) and Kyle Kukkonen (Michigan Tech) were named Defenseman and Rookie of the Week, respectively. Noah Giesbrecht (Ferris State) was the conference’s Goaltender of the Week.

The newly formed high school JV Hockey team took the ice for their first set of games this weekend. Just like the Emeralds Varsity Co-op, the JV team is made up of players from Manistique, Newberry, and Munising. Players participated in the high school tryouts at the start of November and were slotted onto the team by coaches in the program.
The Manistique Emeralds Varsity Co-op hockey team, which features several Newberry players, started its 2022-2023 season with a pair of difficult games last week. Thursday Night’s season opener sent the team to Iron Mountain for a meeting with the much improved Kingsford Flivvers before the home opener at LIttle Bear West Arena in Manistique on Saturday afternoon against Hanccock, who has one of the top high school programs in the Upper Peninsula.

The Negaunee Miners will have U.P. Power behind them as they travel to Ford Field and face the Grand Rapids West Catholic Falcons for the MHSAA Division 6 championship today. Game starts at 4:30 p.m. and is available on Bally Sports Network (formerly known as Fox Sports Detroit).

Munising’s accolades continued with the announcement of the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association (MHSFCA) First Team All State selection on Wednesday, November 23. Two players from Munising were selected in offensive lineman Riley Murk and linebacker Jacob Mattson. Three total spots on the all state Division 1 eight-man team were from the U.P., with Newberry’s Zach Burton also being selected.

When their playoff run ends, teams can normally find some consolation if their loss comes to the eventual state champion. But that got a little old for Martin.
