State of Michigan retirees and their guests will meet for a luncheon at the Up North Events Center in Gwinn on Monday, May 13. The luncheon will begin at noon. Retirees and their guests need to make reservations with Edgar Sommers by calling 906-250-5560 no later than Sunday, May 5, 2024.
Heather Nayback K-12 educators are all too familiar with spring testing across all levels of public education, but this year a big change has been implemented, with the College Board offering the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) and SAT and Michigan continuing to offer the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP) online. Munising High School students use their school assigned Chromebooks to take these assessments.
Ben Murphy The Superior Central softball team kept its undefeated early season record intact last week. The Lady Cougars were playing down at Rapid River on Tuesday, April 23, where they won the first game 26-11 and also won a weather shortened game two, 5-1.

Ben Murphy Superior Central baseball was able to enjoy its first win of the season on Friday. The Cougars were hosting Powers North Central, and picked up a 13-4 win in game one of the Central Skyline Conference doubleheader, before falling 5-2 in the nightcap.

Richard David “Dave” Erickson, age 81, of Munising, died April 19, 2024, at his winter home in Dade City, Florida. He was born on June 9, 1942, in Munising to the late Richard T. and Lucille (Passinault) Erickson. Dave graduated from William G. Mather High School in 1960. He moved to Milwaukee, WI, and worked for Controls Company of America in manufacturing. This is where he met Mary Helen Young. They were married May 22, 1965, and soon after moved to Lower Michigan where he worked for Canteen as a vendor in GM’s Pontiac plant before moving back to the Munising area to raise their three children. Dave worked at the Clevland Cliffs Iron Company and was later hired at Kimberly Clark and worked in the lab there until he retired in 1997. Dave enjoyed ice fishing, four-wheeling, helping family, cooking, baking, deer hunting, and spending time at his property on the 440. He also enjoyed playing games with his extended family and friends. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Knights of Columbus, and Munising Moose Lodge.
Angela Marie (Casper) LeVeque, age 65, of Wetmore, passed peacefully at her home on Wednesday, February 7, 2024. Interment will be at the Munising Township Cemetery in Wetmore on Thursday, May 9, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.
The Michigan State Police is coordinating Camp 911, offering handson learning opportunities to Alger County youth through local law enforcement and first responders. The camp will take place on June 10, 11, and 12 at Mather Elementary School in Munising. Registration costs $20, and sponsorship opportunities are available to provide scholarships. Jennifer Champagne In Alger County, an effort to wipe out blight has been underway, led by the Alger County Land Bank Authority (ACLBA). With nearly $700,000 in first grant monies allocated for blight cleanup and building stabilization projects, the ACLBA, under the guidance of Pam Johnson, Alger County Treasurer, is making significant strides in transforming blighted properties into community assets.
