Munising Memorial Hospital has been awarded the 2024 Performance Leadership Award for Excellence in Quality by the Chartis Center for Rural Health. The award recognizes hospitals that perform in the top 25th percentile for quality, outcomes and/or patient perspective among rural hospitals.
100 Years Ago: February 1925 Wright’s Weekly In February 1925, an unusual case of illegal duck hunting made headlines in Mathias Township. District Warden John A. Vixena and Deputy Warden Julius Thorsen arrested two trappers for killing ducks out of season. The case revealed that a section of Trout Lake had remained unfrozen, providing wintering grounds for an unexpected number of waterfowl. Meanwhile, Munising’s fire department was called out in the early hours after a blaze erupted in a storehouse behind the Munising Candy Kitchen. The origin remained a mystery, but damage was minimal.

Loren Graham, Alger County’s northernmost resident for over five decades, passed away in Boston on Dec. 15 at the age of 91. He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Pat) Albjerg Graham, and their daughter, Meg Graham Peterson.

After a two-year hiatus caused by a lack of snow, the UP200 sled dog race is set to make a triumphant return next week. This iconic event, which began in February 1990, has become a cornerstone of winter sports in the Upper Peninsula, drawing mushers and spectators from across North America.
